African Wind’s maiden call at United Stevedores Amsterdam

Amsterdam, 8 June 2011 - African Wind, the newest vessel in the fleet of German shipping company BOCS, Bremen Overseas Chartering and Shipping, made its maiden call at the Amsterdam port on Friday 3 June 2011. The vessel moored at the terminal of United Stevedores Amsterdam (USA), part of the Ter Haak Group.

African Wind is the first of three multipurpose dry cargo vessels newly built for BOCS. Her sister vessels African Forest and African River will shortly start operations and call in Amsterdam every three to four weeks. They will sail between West Africa and Northern Europe, can operate in deep and shallow waters, and have their own gear and cranes in order to be independent of the cargo (un)loading equipment in African ports
The first cargo consisted of wood from Libreville (Gabon) and Douala (Cameroon) and Dutch timber importers have expressed their delight with BOCS’ regular line service to Amsterdam. As the Ter Haak terminal is centrally located, provides outdoor and indoor storage and is an intermodal facility with rail, inland shipping and road connections, efficient handling and connection of cargo flows is assured. BOCS also has the intention to transport cocoa, while its outgoing cargo will mainly consist of general cargo, bulk and project cargo.

The maiden call did not go unnoticed: African Wind was brought in by tugboats from Iskes and welcomed by Commercial Manager Michael van Toledo from the Port of Amsterdam who handed Captain Sergei Veselovsky the traditional port emblem. The skipper was impressed: “First the beautiful sprays from the tugboat water cannons at the pier of IJmuiden and now this festive reception at Ter Haak. What a great day!"

About BOCS Situated in Bremen, Bremen Overseas Chartering and Shipping is successfully operating a conventional regular liner service between Northern Europe and the West African coast for 20 years. “In BOCS you find a reliable partner who combines innovation, foresight, competence and market knowledge with long experience and a wide network of partners", states Mrs. Ilse Fliege, Managing Director of BOCS.
